This Frontier consultancy & business skills course has been curated using the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Level 5 Professional Consulting qualification framework and is the first unit students must complete on their journey to Chartered status. It aims to provide an introduction to the consultancy professional an appreciation of the wide range of skills & knowledge required to be an effective consultant no matter your sector, background or industry.

Consulting is an exciting and continually evolving field which offers opportunities to work in a variety of industries and settings: from strategy and operations to more specialised areas such as security risk management, cyber, finance and IT. Whilst there are no pre-requisites, it is expected that students will be intending to enter into a management or risk & security consultant role and will have relevant experience appropriate to their sector or technical area of expertise (minimum 2 years) in which they intend to consult or be educated to Level 5 within that field.


Unit 540: Principles of Management Consulting

This unit focuses on developing an in-depth understanding of management consulting and mechanisms for its delivery in terms of different models of the consultancy cycle. Learners will consider the benefits of management consulting, the relationships involved in the delivery of consulting interventions and the impact of ethics, values, and governance on the work they do.  Effective management consulting provides clients with the objective and independent expertise, advice and guidance to navigate change.

On completion of Module 1 you will:

  • Understand the nature of consulting

  • Be able to appreciate the client - consultant relationship dynamics

  • Know how to communicate effectively with clients

  • Accumulate 80 learning hours (30 guided)

  • Submit 2 assignments

  • Complete 7 comprehensive sessions

Module 1: Principles of Management Consulting

This CMI Course focuses on developing a range of hard and soft skills such as an appreciation of the Consulting Cycle and the numerous models developed whether hard process or soft behavioural types. The course will analyse different consulting modes and their relationship to the consultant’s role and responsibilities, professionalism and communication challenges. It will provide insights to enable you to build successful client relationships, in-depth understanding of management consulting and mechanisms for its delivery.
